Snow Blocks Hat

It’s been a bit since I have done a hat pattern so today I am bringing you a new one.  I’m calling it the “Snow Blocks Hat” because to me that is just what it looks like, little blocks of snow all stacked up.

You could use any kind of worsted weight yarn for this, but I choose some Mary Maxim Starlette, which makes this hat super soft and warm and cuddly.  Which is kind of everything you could possibly want in a hat, am I right?

Supplies
1 skein of Mary Maxim Starlette Worsted Weight in White (3 1/2 oz./180 yds) or comparable worsted weight yarn.
1 fur pom pom (or make a yarn pom pom from the yarn that is left over)
J/10 6mm hook
Large eye needle

Stitches used
Chain (ch)
Slip Stitch (sl st)
Single Crochet (sc)
Double Crochet (dc)
Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc)

Ribbing:
Ch 8.
R1) Sc in back loop of second chain from hook and back loop of each chain across. (7 sc) Ch 1, turn.
R2) Sc in back loop of each stitch across. Ch 1, turn.
R3-60) Repeat row 2.
At this point your ribbing should measure 17″ unstretched. If you need to add or subtract rows to reach this length, do so in multiples of 3. Once the correct length is reached, join short edges of ribbing with a slip stitch. Ch 1, turn so that you are working down the long side of the ribbing.

Body of Hat:
R1) Sc in the end of each row around for a total of 60 stitches or whatever number correlates to the number of rows that you have. Join with sl st to first sc.
R2. Ch 1, sc in first stitch, ch 2, skip 2 stitches. [Sc in next stitch, ch 2, skip 2 stitches.] Repeat [] around. Join with sl st to beginning sc.
R3) Ch 2, fpdc around the first sc from the previous row, dc 2 into chain 2 space. [Fpdc around sc, dc 2 into ch 2 space.] Repeat [] around. Join with sl st to first fpdc.
R4-21) Repeat rounds 2-3. Finish off, leaving a long tail.
With a needle and the long tail, stitch around, working through the top loops. Draw yarn up tight, pull to inside and knot. Weave in loose ends.

Attaching the Pom Pom:
With a scrap piece of yarn, pull yarn through the loop on the pom pom and pull both loose ends to inside of hat. Tie into a tight bow. Attaching the pom pom in this way will allow you to easily remove it when it is time to wash the hat.

Christmas Patchwork Pillow

Today’s project is not so much a pattern as a “what I did”. Or at least as much as I can remember of what I did. I started this project over two years ago, and then we moved. If you have ever moved, you know how things inevitably get shuffled, and you lose track of things. Eventually I found it and finished it, and meant to share it last year. Then time got away from me and before I knew it, Christmas was over. And now, here we are right on the doorstep of this Christmas, and I am finally getting it shared.

Of course, you wouldn’t have to necessarily make this a Christmas pillow, it would be beautiful done with a wide variety of different fabrics and yarns. I made this pillow because I had found this beautiful blanket done with fabric and crochet, and I wanted to test it on a smaller scale before investing in a full size blanket. I will tell you as much as I can remember of what I did to translate this project from a blanket to a pillow.

First of all, you will need to refer to the blanket pattern for the basic instructions. You can find that here. Isn’t it gorgeous?!

I used an assortment of Christmas prints, and the yarn that I chose is some vintage Red Heart Baby.  I believe this is a #2 weight yarn.  I don’t remember the exact amount of yarn that I used, but I do know that I had some left over from what is pictured here.

I was making an 18″ pillow, and I decided that 4″ finished blocks of fabric would be about the right size.  If you want a 1/4″ seam allowance, cut your blocks at 4 1/2″ square, if you want a 1/2″ seam allowance, cut your blocks at 5″ square.  Follow all of the cutting and assembling directions from the High Tea Crochet Fusion Quilt.  You will need a total of 9 blocks for the pillow top.

Next, follow the directions for crocheting around each square.  I don’t remember which hook I used, but choose one that is appropriate for the weight of your yarn.

Continue following the instructions to join all of your squares.  I added a border of double crochet around the whole thing once I had all of the blocks joined together, and this brought my pillow top to the appropriate size.  In addition to that, it finished everything off and gave me something to stitch to when attaching the back of the pillow.

Next, cut your pillow back to the size of the pillow that you are making, plus seam allowances.  I usually add a 1/2″ seam allowance for pillow tops.

Fold over and press the seam allowance all around the pillow back.

Miter and press the corners as shown.

I choose to install a zipper at the bottom so I could easily take the cover off and wash it as needed.  If you decide to do the same, install the zipper first.

With right sides of the pillow together, sew around the remaining 3 sides.  I sewed a very narrow seam for this, maybe 1/8″ at the most.  Basically, I wanted to make sure that I had everything caught and sewed together, but I did not want to sew in too deeply into the crochet border of the top.

Once all that is done, turn your pillow cover right side out, insert your pillow form, zip up, and enjoy!

Cozy Peppermint Blanket

Today I’m bringing you the Cozy Peppermint Blanket. This blanket just makes me want to snuggle up with some hot chocolate and sugar cookies! It definitely adds a bright spot to the cold gray days of winter.

I wanted to do alternating stripes, but I did NOT want to weave in all those ends! And so, I came up with a way of carrying the yarn that will leave you with minimal ends to weave in. Hooray! This method won’t work on all types of stitch patterns, but it does work well here and what little mess is created along the sides is covered by the border.

Blanket measures 53″ x 60″.

Supplies
(3) skeins of Red Heart Super Saver worsted weight 7 oz. skein in red
(3) skeins of Red Heart Super Saver worsted weight 7 oz. skein in cream
N/9mm hook

Stitches used
Chain (ch)
Slip Stitch (sl st)
Double Crochet (dc)

With Cream, ch 130
R1) Dc in 4’th chain, [skip next ch, dc twice in next chain.] Repeat [] across, ending with a skipped ch and a dc in the last ch. Finish off but do not cut yarn, instead pull the whole skein through and tighten.
R2) With red, starting at the opposite end from where you just finished off with cream, slip stitch to join at the end of the row, ch 3. Dc twice in between each set of dc. Dc in last dc, but change colors by dropping red and picking up cream for the last yarn over and pull through. Chain 3 and turn.
R3) Dc twice in between each set of dc. Dc in last dc, and finish off same as in row 1.
R4) Go back and pick up the red, sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3 of the previous row, ch 3. Dc twice in between each set of dc. Dc in last dc same as in row 2. Ch 3 with cream and turn.
R5-93) Repeat rows 3 and 4, ending with a row 3 repeat. Finish off cream and cut.

Border
R1) With red, sl st to top of ch 3 of previous row, ch 3. Dc in next dc and each dc across. Work one extra dc at the corner and turn, working 2 dc into the side of each stitch. Continue working dc around the blanket, working and extra dc in each corner. Join with sl st to beginning ch 3, ch 3.
R2) Dc in each dc around, working 3 dc into each corner dc. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch 3, finish off, weave in all ends.

For best results with Red Heart Super Saver yarn, immediately wash and use a quality fabric softener such as Downy or Snuggle. Dry in the dryer and the result will be a beautiful soft and snuggly blanket.

One Skein Alice Blue Scarf

Today’s scarf is named for a very dear friend of mine.  When I was making this scarf, she saw me working on it and fell in love.  Blue, especially this rich shade of blue, is her favorite color.  As I was thinking about what to name this scarf, I thought about her, and how much she liked it, and decided to name it for her.

Alice Blue works up lengthwise and has a lacey look to the stitch that is quite elegant.

My scarf measures 8″ wide and 60″ long.

Butterscotch Buttons Scarf

I have fallen completely in love with this scarf! Because it is so wide you can wear it like a shawlette, and I’m not even a shawlette kind of girl! The color is absolutely gorgeous, unfortunately I could not convince my camera to do it justice. This scarf offers a perfect amount of versatile warmth that works well on crisp fall days. Drape it over your shoulders for a bit of extra warmth during the day, then bunch it up around your neck with a jacket when the temperatures drop in the evening.

One note about the yarn that I used here. I bought this yarn at a yard sale and the previous owner had removed the labels. I am pretty sure that it is Caron Simply Soft based on it’s feel, look etc. One skein was full, and one skein had been partially used. I weighed it and found that I had about 4 oz in the partial skein. A full skein of Caron SS is 6 oz. Thus my pattern calls for 10 oz. yarn but if you have two full skeins, go ahead and use them! I wanted to write the pattern as I worked it for the sample shown but I did include instructions for using the full skein. (I personally would have preferred having 2 full skeins for this but it is what it is.)  Also, the color. I’m guessing it is Gold but it could also be Sunshine.

Enough of all that, let’s get to making!  My scarf measures 12″ wide by 6 feet long.

Supplies
Approx. 10 oz of Caron Simply Soft (Gold?)  Or just go for two full skeins. 🙂
J/10 6mm Hook

Stitches used
Chain (ch)
Double Crochet (dc)
Foundation Double Crochet (fdc)
Double Crochet 4 Together (dc4tog)

R1) Fdc 217 (or multiple of 6 plus 1), ch 4, turn.
R2) Skip first 3 stitches, work 4 dc into next stitch. [Ch 1, skip 2 stitches, dc into next stitch. Ch 1, skip next two stitches, work 4 dc into next stitch.] Repeat [] across, ending with ch 1, skip 2 stitches, and dc into last stitch. Ch 5, turn.
R3) [Work dc4tog into the 4 dc cluster from the previous row. Ch 2, dc into next dc. Ch 2.] Repeat [] across, ending with ch 2 and dc into 3’rd ch of turning ch from previous row. Ch 3, turn.
R4) Dc into first stitch. [Ch 1, dc into dc4tog cluster. Ch 1, work 4 dc into next dc.] Repeat [] across, ending with ch 1, and 2 dc worked into 3’rd ch of turning ch from previous row. Ch 3, turn.
R5) Dc in second dc. Ch 2, dc into next dc, ch 2. [Dc4tog in next 4 dc, ch 2, dc into next dc, ch 2] Repeat [] across, ending with dc in last dc, and dc in top of turning ch from previous row. Ch 4, turn.
R6-19) Repeat rows 2-5. For last row of pattern, ch 3, turn. (If working with 2 full skeins of yarn, you should have enough to work an additional 2 rows of the pattern.)
R20) Dc across, working 2 dc in each ch 2 space, and 1 dc in each dc or dc4tog. (In the ch spaces, I worked the dc into the back loops of the chains. You can work them however you like, I chose to do them this way because it gave the row a bit more height.) Finish off, weave in ends.

Scrappy Jack Pumpkins

Scrappy Jack pumpkins! These guys are so addicting and so easy to make! I know, I know, there are a bunch of pumpkin patterns out there already. So, why another one? Well, why not? I had a bunch of scrap yarn to use up and was inspired to make these tiny pumpkins that resemble the miniature Jack-B-Little pumpkins.

Aren’t they adorable?

I designed them to be super simple so they are a perfect project to sit and relax with.

Don’t be afraid to mix and match your yarns to use up even smaller bits.

Let’s do this!

Stitches used
Chain (ch)
Slip Stitch (sl st)
Half Double Crochet (hdc)
Half Double Crochet 2 Together (hdc2tog)

H hook
Small amount of worsted weight yarn.
Small twig
Poly-fil or stuffing of your choice
Very large needle

Starting chains do not count as a stitch in this pattern.

All stitches are worked into the back loop only. This helps to create a great textured look to your pumpkin.

Ch 3
R1) Hdc 10 in first chain made. (10 hdc) Join with a sl st to beginning stitch. Ch 2. Make sure to leave the beginning tail of yarn on the right side of the pumpkin. You will use it later to help tie off at the end.
R2) Hdc 2 into each stitch from the previous round. (20 hdc) Join with a sl st to beginning stitch. Ch 2.
R3) [Hdc 1 into first stitch, 2 into second stitch.] Repeat [] around. (30 hdc) Join with a sl st to beginning stitch, ch 2.
R4) [Hdc 1 into first stitch, 1 into second stitch, 2 into third stitch.] Repeat [] around. (40 hdc) Join with a sl st to beginning stitch, ch 2.
R5) Hdc into each stitch around. (40 hdc) Join with a sl st to beginning stitch, ch 2.
R6) Hdc into each stitch around. (40 hdc) Join with a sl st to beginning stitch, ch 2.
R7) [Hdc 1 into first stitch, 1 into second stitch. Hdc2tog in third and fourth stitch.] Repeat [] around. (30 hdc) Join with a sl st to beginning stitch, ch 2.
R8) [Hdc 1 into first stitch. Hdc2tog into second and third stitch.] Repeat [] around. (20 hdc) Join with a sl st to beginning stitch, ch 2.
R9) [Hdc2tog into first and second stitch.] Repeat [] around. (10 hdc) Finish off, leaving about a 40 inch tail.

Stuff the pumpkin. With a large needle and the tail of thread, stitch around the top of the pumpkin with in and out stitches, draw up tight.
Push the needle straight down through the center of the pumpkin, pull tight. Bring the yarn around the outside of the pumpkin and push the needle back down through the pumpkin. Pull tight. Repeat this process to make 4 equal sections. Then continue the process to create 2 sections out of each of those 4 sections. End with the yarn at the bottom of the pumpkin, and tie it in a knot together with your starting yarn end. Weave each end back up through the pumpkin to hide it, and trim the ends.

Glue a small piece of twig into the top of your pumpkin, and you are all done!

Baby Bunting Blanket

So, where have I been? Well, summer happened, that’s where I’ve been! We started with a dry spring around here, but then it quickly started to rain, and it didn’t stop for days. Weeks, really. Flooding was happening everywhere, and the ground was a giant sponge. Every time we got 5 minutes of sunshine, everybody raced outside to mow their lawns and do any other yard work that they could. Because of all the rain, our planting season on the farm ran late, and then it was a mad dash to get everything in before it was to late to do it. I’ve had this blanket done for awhile, I just haven’t had the time to get it photographed and get the pattern written down on here.

About that. It had been so long since I finished the blanket that I almost lost track of what I did to make it. Panic! But no worries, here it is.

My finished blanket measured 32″ x 36″.

Cotton Candy Socks

Well, spring finally happened and suddenly there is not nearly enough time for crocheting.  I’m not complaining though, this warm weather is lovely.

Today’s pattern is for these socks.  With their open stitch design, these are perfect for cool springtime evenings.  These are worked from the toe up, and then the heel is worked last.  I used an absolutely gorgeous yarn by Cascade Yarns.  It is listed as a worsted weight, but I think it seems closer to a #3 yarn.  I’m not sure what would be a good substitute, maybe a #3 that is on the heavier side.

Supplies
3.5 oz worsted weight yarn (I am using Cascade Yarns Cherub Aran in color 502.  This yarn is listed as a worsted weight, however, I would class it as a light worsted.)
H/5mm hook

Bicycle Tote

I’ve been seeing bicycles pop up on all kinds of things- pillows, wall art, figurines, and yep, tote bags.  I thought it would be fun to do a crochet version of a bicycle motif bag.  Bicycles make me think of summer and sunshine and all things warm and happy.  We need that here today because it is snowing!  Again.  It didn’t snow all winter long but now that it is spring and all the flowers and trees are blooming it keeps snowing.  Oh well, sit inside and crochet this bag and warm days will come soon.
